SPG Op-Ed Writing Contest

This is a great opportunity for scientists to communicate their research to the public, especially in time for midterm elections!

It's nearly the end of October, but the scariest day on the horizon isn't Halloween. Election Day is in a little over a week, so don't forget to vote on Nov. 6!

Also due Nov. 6? Your Op-Eds! As many of you know, SPG is hosting an Op-Ed writing contest ahead of the midterm election. The goal of this project is to elevate the importance of scientific research in the national conversation. Submit a science-related Op-Ed to us by Nov 6th to be eligible. We strongly encourage you to submit to local publications like your hometown newspapers. These smaller papers are a fantastic way to reach people who may not have much exposure to scientific research and its societal benefits. Plus, after it is published, we can help broaden your reach via Twitter!

The Science Policy Group has been hosting Op-Ed Coffee Hours throughout October. In addition to peer editing, we will help you identify candidates running for office in your district for you to send your Op-Ed to and tweet your messages at. Our last Coffee Hour will be next week, so stay tuned for an announcement about a time and place! If you cannot attend, you can email us your Op-Ed by Oct. 30 for feedback!

To enter:
Email your Op-Ed and proof of submission (publication not required) to [email protected] by Nov 6th.

Prizes:
1st place:
$300 cash
Raffle: Five $100 cash prizes
