Bioethics Speaker Series featuring Wendy Anderson, MD

Can we avoid a train wreck? Navigating goals of care in the setting of serious illness

We aim to provide patient-centered and family-focused care for patients who have serious illness. Yet so often well-intended goal of care discussions leave patients and families on the defensive and clinicians in moral distress. This presentation will discuss current models for navigating challenging goals of care discussions, and for disseminating these models using communication skills training and implementation science approaches.

Wendy Anderson, MD is a Palliative Care Physician and Associate Professor in the UCSF School of Medicine. Her work focuses on serious illness communication training and models for disseminating best practices. Past projects include work with hospitalist physicians and ICU bedside nurses. She is faculty for VitalTalk, a nonprofit that teaches serious illness communication, and directs the San Francisco Bay Area VitalTalk Hub. She currently leads a California Health Care Foundation Funded needs assessment of primary palliative care needs in California Public Hospitals. Clinically, Dr. Anderson attends on the UCSF Palliative Care Consultation Service and is actively involved in student, resident, and faculty education about communication, palliative care, pain management, and ethics.
