UCSF Academic Senate’s Eighteenth Annual Faculty Research Lecture – Clinical Science Awarded to Donna Ferriero, MD, MS

The Academic Senate is pleased to award Donna Ferriero, MD, MS, the Eighteenth Annual Faculty Research Lectureship – Clinical Science for her contributions to clinical discoveries in neonatal brain injury. The lecture, titled “Protecting the Newborn Brain – We Need Cocktails & Ice,” will take place on Tuesday, February 19, 2019 at 3:30 p.m. in Byers Auditorium, Mission Bay Campus. The event will be recorded live and a reception will follow.

A world renowned neurologist, Dr. Ferriero specializes on pediatrics. Her research covers a wide range of topics from genetics to biochemistry to organ level investigation of brain injuries. Dr. Ferriero has led cooperative clinical research projects using advance magnetic resonance brain imaging techniques to study newborns after premature birth or term birth asphyxia.  

Dr. Ferriero has published more than 250 peer-reviewed journal articles. Of particular note, her influential 2004 New England Journal of Medicine review on neonatal brain injuries has been cited almost 1000 times. She has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine (2005) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2013).

Dr. Ferriero is a Professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Neurology at the University of California, San Francisco. She received her MD from UCSF in 1979.

The Eighteenth Annual Faculty Research Lecture – Clinical Science will be held in Byers Auditorium, Mission Bay Campus on Tuesday, February 19, 2019, at 3:30 p.m. and will be recorded live. The lecture is open to the campus community and the general public.  

*** Since 2001, this award has been bestowed on an individual member of the UCSF faculty with outstanding achievements in clinical research. Nominations are made by UCSF faculty, who consider the clinical research contributions of their colleagues and submit nominations for this prestigious award to the Academic Senate Committee on Research. Each year, the Committee on Research selects the recipient of this award.
