The UCSF Academic Senate would like to invite all UCSF faculty to attend the upcoming Senate/UCSF Library sponsored town hall, Accelerating Open Access Publishing at UC through Negotiations with Elsevier.”

This town hall is part of a major outreach initiative by the Senate and the Library to both inform and engage faculty about the ongoing UC/Elsevier negotiations. The UC/Elsevier contract ends on December 31, 2018. Elsevier is the largest publisher of UC content (~18%), but UC, as a system, spends 25% of its $40M systemwide journals budget on Elsevier journals. These negotiations are not only important for budgetary reasons, but also for the future of Open Access (OA) at the University. This is especially relevant for UCSF, which was one of the early pioneers in OA. Subsequently, the UCSF Senate feels that it is vitally important to get the word out about these negotiations not only to inform faculty of UC’s twin goals of cost reductions and OA, but also because 1) faculty and students might lose immediate access to some Elsevier content (depending on the outcome of the negotiations); and 2) other protracted Elsevier contract negotiations (e.g., in Europe) have attracted broad attention in higher education media and other outlets.
