During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been encouraged to see scientists throughout our country and world stepping forward to study this virus and develop treatment options to bring a resolution to this disease. Guided by our mission to highlight, connect and support female scientists, we are hosting a COVID-19 Mini Symposium to showcase the current COVID-19 research efforts of 4 incredible female scientists.

Dr. Carolyn Calfee is a world-renowned researcher of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), a type of respiratory failure that is characteristic of severe cases of COVID-19. She is leading an interdisciplinary team of scientists and frontline clinicians to immunophenotype COVID-19 patients to identify biologic predictors of disease severity and clinical outcomes.

Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett is a leader in the fight to design a COVID-19 vaccine from the NIH Vaccine Research Center. Impressive beyond her years and passionate about helping others, her salient work led to the first vaccine in clinical trials.

Dr. Carina Marquez is an Infectious Disease Physician at UCSF/ZSFG who is committed to disrupting the transmission of COVID-19 and is an ardent advocate for equitable healthcare. Deeply motivated to provide care to those who need it most, globally Dr. Marquez has been instrumental in the fight against HIV, TB, and is continuing to do so now with COVID-19.

Dr. Ruby Yu is leading the COVID-19 Testing Project at UCSF to provide an ongoing resource for reliable COVID-19 antibody tests to inform the scientific and medical community, policy makers, and the general public.

Voices like these, which are crucial to the discoveries that will drive scientific and economic resolution, are often underrepresented in scientific presentations and in the media. By providing a public platform to showcase their work we hope to not only publicize cutting edge COVID-19 research but to elevate the voices of the women who are driving these discoveries.

Throughout this event we are encouraging participants to donate to our sponsored partner, the Women’s Global Empowerment Fund, who is working to prepare and equip local communities in Uganda to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.
